West Virginia football: 3 overreactions to Week 4 Oklahoma State loss
By Phil Poling
West Virginia football lost an ugly game to the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday. I’m here to wildly overreact about the Mountaineers’ performance.
After beating the brakes off of Eastern Kentucky 56-10 in their season-opener, the Mountaineers traveled to Stillwater to face the 15th-ranked Cowboys on Saturday. It was an ugly game for West Virginia’s offense, especially when they needed to make something happen.
A final score of 27-13 doesn’t look too bad, but that’s more of an indictment on Oklahoma State and their lack of putting points on the board, not how well the Mountaineers played.
West Virginia did some inspiring things on offense, though. Quarterback Jarret Doege threw for 285 yards. The running game looked phenomenal at times, in particular Leddie Brown who eclipsed 100 yards in consecutive games. And wide receiver Winston Wright tallied 127 receiving yards. But a lot of this production was negated by untimely penalties and terrible play-calling in key situations.
The defense picked up right where they left off last season, keeping the ‘Eers in games while their offense tries to figure things out. But how long can that last? With this group, however, I think their chances are good.
Many Mountaineer fans have already put this game behind them and are on to Baylor. But what about those of us who’d like to revisit what went wrong? Or how to fix it? Maybe overreact a bit? You’re in luck, because that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
