2. KJ Costello will be a heavy Heisman contender

Most Heisman Trophy winners at the end of the season do not get much attention in the preseason or at all. Last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow was not given a vote during the preseason as he gained traction throughout the year. KJ Costello is a player that has gained some serious traction towards a potential Heisman Trophy this season.

Costello has already had a great performance where he is the unquestioned leader of the Bulldogs’ air-raid offense. He was the passing leader for the entire Week 4 of the season ahead of Florida quarterback Kyle Trask by 207 yards. He showed poised in his throws to different receivers against the Tigers. In just one game, Costello currently ranks 16th in the nation in total passing yards.

One of the biggest factors to his early start to a potential Heisman Trophy award was his ability to overcome mistakes and a tenacious Tigers defense. Beating a top-10 ranked program is one of the most impressive attributes that a Heisman contender can do. This is a potential showing of things to come for the Bulldogs offense, led by Costello.

As the Bulldogs continue to win, he will gain more traction towards the race for the Heisman especially with other participants, whose seasons are shorter. It will be difficult to convince to vote a player from the Pac-12 or Big Ten as the most impactful player and best all-around player.

As long as Costello continues to win big games, he could be the first player from Mississippi State to win the Heisman.
