Will BYU football race to the forefront of the New Year’s Six conversation in the month of October? Let’s take a look at some bolds for the month.

Who could have seen BYU bursting out of the gates like it did? The Cougars have raced out to a 2-0 start with back-to-back blowout wins. They dismantled Navy in the season opener and then did the same to Troy the following game.

The Cougars are entering a Week 5 battle with Louisiana Tech. Both offenses can be explosive and if this game lives up to the hype, we could see a shootout in Provo.

October is an important month for the Cougars, starting with Louisiana Tech. The Cougars actually have fiver games in the month and this could be the difference between a New Year’s Six push and a disappointing bowl-less season.

What might we see from the Cougars this month?

3. BYU maintains a top-10 defense

After two weeks, BYU has one of the best defenses in the country. The Cougars have allowed just five points per game (10 total) and 165 total yards per contest. If that continues through the month of October, there’s a good chance that it will pace the entire nation.

However, that type of dominance is almost unsustainable which is why I believe the Cougars will take a minor step back against five opponents, but not a drastic one.

The Cougars face Louisiana Tech, UTSA, Houston, Texas State and Western Kentucky and none of those teams outside of the former have potentially explosive offenses. That means BYU will remain one of the best defensive teams in the country.

BYU will finish the month of October with a top-10 defense.
