College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 6
By Zach Bigalke
SMU won’t be denied a return to the AP Top 25 this week after they became the first four-win team in the FBS on Saturday. The Mustangs remained unbeaten in a down-to-the-wire contest against defending American Athletic Conference champion Memphis that ended when SMU forced a Brady White fumble with less than two minutes remaining and then drove to put kicker Chris Naggar in position to drill the winning 43-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining.
Shane Buechele outperformed Brady White through the air, finishing with 474 yards and three touchdowns on 32-of-45 passing. The ground game was less effective for the Mustangs, no mistaking this outfit for the Pony Express of yesteryear. But SMU’s defense forced four turnovers, ensuring that the home side walked away with their first AAC victory of the season and put a key rival in a deficit.
SMU now gets a bye week after playing most of the way through September, but they will be back on the field for a Friday night showdown in Week 7 at Tulane. They should still be ranked when they head to New Orleans.
