Georgia Football: 3 takeaways from statement win over Auburn
3. Stetson Bennett can stabilize QB situation
The Bulldogs were in shock when transfer QB and likely starter Jamie Newman opted out of the 2020 season. This sent Georgia into scramble mode to find a new answer at the position.
Last week, freshman D’Wan Mathis started off the game but did not last too long. Stagnated drives and an interception led to a quick change. In steps Stetson Bennett, who led a 35–3 run to close out the game and secured the win.
Bennett has a great story, and started at UGA in 2017 as a walk-on. He went on to find a starting opportunity at Jones County Junior College. After being very successful there he was able to find his way back onto the Georgia team this time with a scholarship.
Bennett has taken advantage of his newly found opportunity and earned his first win as a starter tonight.
Bennett was efficient, able to throw with a nice touch and very clutch on third down (7/10, 109 yards, and a touchdown). He may not be the guy Georgia fans were expecting to be in charge. But, he is a viable option who has proven he has toughness in him.
