Iowa State football: 3 takeaways from upset victory over Oklahoma
By Andrew Tineo
1. The “bend, but don’t break” defense broke for Oklahoma
Even with the big plays given up by Purdy’s arm, it was the Oklahoma defense that bended, but didn’t break. This isn’t the first time that the Sooners defense has had to play that way.
Over the past few years, Oklahoma has had games where the defense has had to do just enough to preserve a win. Oklahoma’s close win over TCU last season, as well as, the Iowa State game last year are clear examples of how they’ve had to do it.
Even late in 2018, when OU gave up 40 to freshman Pooka Williams of Kansas or 56 to Will Grier-led West Virginia.
That could not be more true tonight, with Brock Purdy being able to make any kind of plays that he wants. With Iowa State being able to establish a run game, particularly with Hall.
What advantage that the Cyclones did have that the Sooners countered with is the difference in height. Iowa State recruits big bodied, physical pass catchers that are also vertical threats. Oklahoma has quite a few shorter DB’s, that are fast and athletic.
However, similar to last week, Oklahoma’s defense crumbled, when they were needed the most. Breece Hall was able to get loose in the 2nd half, finishing with over 120 yards and two touchdowns.
No rest for the weary as Oklahoma will play in the Red River Rivalry next week against Texas. Iowa State will stay at home, to play the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
