College Football Top 25 Power Rankings, Week 6: Georgia makes case for No. 1
Shane Buechele is off to one heck of a start to his 2020 season and that’s helped SMU to a quick four wins and no losses. The Mustangs look dominant, scoring 115 points in the two games before a matchup with Memphis and SMU took care of business against the Tigers, too, 30-27. I’m intrigued by this team and an American Athletic title seems very possible.
Not a single game has been played by Penn State this season yet, but once Oct. 24 rolls around, we’ll probably see a motivated James Franklin-coached team which will be the second-best the Big Ten has to offer. For now, a top-15 spot seems fair.
The American Athletic Conference is fielding a couple of top-15 teams in my power rankings this week as Cincinnati just keeps beating everyone. Luke Fickell decided to stay in Cincinnati instead of bolting for Michigan State this offseason and it seems like he made the right decision as he’s 3-0 with wins over No. 22 Army and South Florida in consecutive games. They’d be top 10 if they faced more legitimate foes.
Tennessee has had a gift start to the 2020 season with matchups against South Carolina and Missouri. The Volunteers snuck away with a 31-27 win over the Gamecocks in the opener before dismantling Eli Drinkwitz and the Tigers the following week. Jarrett Guarantano is playing solid ball and the defense is stepping up. Jeremy Pruitt’s team has all the momentum in the world.
After Oklahoma State struggled to beat Tulsa in the opener at home, I was ready to write the Cowboys off. But, they’ve won two straight in convincing fashion and Tulsa just took down a really good UCF team so that close win doesn’t look so shaky after all. Chuba Hubbard finally got back on track with a 100-yard game against Kansas and freshman quarterback Shane Illingworth continues to impress in place of Spencer Sanders.
