College Football Top 25 Power Rankings, Week 6: Georgia makes case for No. 1
No, the Buckeyes haven’t played a single game yet and yes, they are currently sitting in the top five of my power rankings. Why? Because this team is going to be a serious playoff contender and it’d be a shame to leave them out of this top tier simply because their conference fumbled the heck out of its fall plans and they’re now forced to begin on Oct. 24.
Kyle Trask looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the country and he’s making up for an average defense. He looks like this year’s Joe Burrow, throwing 10 touchdown passes through the first two games but there’s still plenty of work to do as Ole Miss and South Carolina aren’t exactly the class of the SEC right now. Texas A&M awaits in College Station this week and then the Gators face LSU the following week. We are going to learn a lot about these explosive Gators by Week 8.
Don’t get me wrong here, Clemson is arguably the No. 1 team in the country but I just can’t justify having the Tigers above Georgia and Alabama right now as both have better wins and are playing more dominant brands of football. Clemson has beaten Wake Forest, The Citadel and Virginia so it hasn’t exactly been a gauntlet of a schedule, but that will change with Miami coming to town this week. A strong win over the Hurricanes could vault Trevor Lawrence and Co. back to No. 1.
Just missing out on that No. 1 spot, but passing Clemson in my eyes is Georgia. The Bulldogs looked horrid for a half against Arkansas to start the season but Stetson Bennett has stepped up and over the past six quarters, they have out-scored opponents 59-9 and one of those was a top-10 Auburn team. The defense has come to play this year and if Bennett can prove to be more than a one-hit wonder, this team will be special.
Alabama is the best team in the country right now and I don’t think there’s any debate. The Crimson Tide had their way with Missouri in the opener and then looked bored in a blowout of No. 14 Texas A&M in game two. Mac Jones looks like the next great Alabama quarterback — who would have thought? — and the Crimson Tide’s defense is scary. Nick Saban’s team looks destined to get back to the College Football Playoff in 2020.
