2. Mac Jones becomes a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender

Before the 2020 season, the preseason Heisman Trophy talk was to Alabama running back Najee Harris. Many football experts and Tide fans thought that Harris’ role would elevate as Mac Jones was entering into his first full season as the starting quarterback.

Instead, offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian chose to continue the high-powered passing attack from last year with Tua Tagovailoa (before his season-ending injury) and Jones. In two games this season, Jones has passed for 684 yards, six touchdowns and only one interception on 38-of-51 passing. The Tide has averaged 45 points per game, which is third in the nation.

Tide slot receiver Jaylen Waddle and new starting wide receiver John Metchie have had huge games in the previous two games. This Saturday, senior wide receiver DeVonta Smith is expected to have a huge game at the Ole Miss Rebels after catching 11 receptions for 274 yards and five touchdowns last season against the Rebels. If Smith has another game close to this caliber, it would be three games with three different receivers creating an impact.

Jones has progressed at an incredible rate from last year where he took over for the injured Tagovailoa.

If Jones continues to pass at a high level and keeps the Crimson Tide undefeated or in the hunt for the College Football Playoff, he should be seriously considered for the Heisman Trophy. He may not be in the top three where other quarterbacks in Florida’s Kyle Trask, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence or Miami’s D’Eriq King is but Jones will be in serious talks.
