2. North Carolina (vs. Virginia Tech)

From one Carolina school to another.

I mentioned in my Thoughts Around the Country article earlier this week how underwhelming both North Carolina and quarterback Sam Howell have been so far this season. Howell’s touchdown-to-interception count is 3/3. Not exactly the numbers of a Heisman contender as many expected.

For this upset to happen, Virginia Tech’s solid run game is going to have to be able to pound the ball against one of the nation’s elite rush defenses. Virginia Tech averages an eye-popping 319 yards per game on the ground, while North Carolina gives up just 54 yards per game.

Virginia Tech’s defense should be stronger this weekend after missing nearly a quarter of the roster in each of the last two weeks due to COVID-19. Their defense was good enough even short handed, but getting an increase in depth should really help against a potentially explosive North Carolina offense.
