Georgia football took care of business at home defeating the Tennessee Volunteers handily. Can the Bulldogs defeat Alabama next week?

College football’s unlikeliest of heroes, Georgia starting quarterback Stetson Bennett IV, had another solid game as the Bulldogs defeated the Tennessee Volunteers 44-21 this afternoon between the hedges at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

Bennett, who was not even supposed to start this season, threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns.

Before the pandemic, Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman and USC transfer JT Daniels were supposed to battle for the starting quarterback spot. When the pandemic hit, Newman opted out, and Daniels was just medically cleared. The former walk-on has made the most of his opportunity. Bennett has taken care of the football and understands how to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers.

Bennett also knows that he is playing with the best defense in the SEC, if not the entire country. The Volunteers mustered -1 yards rushing against the Bulldogs smothering defense. This game featured the classic “boa constrictor” Georgia Bulldogs.

Despite the Volunteers struggles, they showed signs of improvement against the elite of the SEC. Vols wide receiver Josh Palmer had 71 yards and two touchdowns, including a 36-yarder against the smothering Bulldogs defense.

The Volunteers had the lead at halftime, but Georgia’s depth at running back and the defensive line ultimately won the day for the Bulldogs as they pulled away in the second half.

The Georgia Bulldogs did not look ahead this week despite the season’s game against the Alabama Crimson tide next week in prime time. The Volunteers have their rivals, the Kentucky Wildcats, next week.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s game.
