Despite getting in its own way a lot of the game, Texas A&M football found a way to upset Florida at Kyle Field. What did we learn from this one?

Texas A&M football came into this game at 1-1, struggling against both Vanderbilt and Alabama. No one gave the Aggies much of a chance in this one, but they were able to pull off the upset with a forced fumble and a last-second field goal.

Kellen Mond hadn’t looked great and had yet to have his career win, but this one may just be the one that he can hang his hat on.

What are the takeaways from this one? Let’s start with the Aggies needed to stop getting in their own way, something that almost cost them the game.

3. The Aggies have to get out of their own way

Texas A&M struggled throughout the game to stay out of its own way. Multiple times big plays for the Aggies would happen, just to be negated by a penalty — normally on defense. That isn’t going to pass throughout the season by any means.

They have to get better at controlling their feelings throughout the game. For example, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that would have pushed the Gators back 15 yards became an offsetting penalty when Leon O’Neal decided to get involved in the fray. Another example? An unnecessary roughness penalty that negated an interception by O’Neal.

Point blank, the Aggies have to get out of their own way if they want to win more games this season. Kellen Mond and the offense can only do so much if the defense keeps getting stupid penalties.
