Michigan Football: Can Wolverines finally win Big Ten in 2020?
By Shane Lunnen
Michigan football has not won a Big Ten title in 16 years. Can they finally break through in a tough Big Ten East division?
The 2004 season was the last year Michigan won a Big Ten championship in football. In the meantime rival Ohio State has won seven outright championships and shared two others. Big Ten East foes Michigan State and Penn State have even won three titles a piece in those 16 years. Michigan has yet to make a trip to Indianapolis since the Big Ten title game’s inception.
It is not like Michigan has not won games. Under Jim Harbaugh, now entering his sixth season in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines have posted a 47-18 record. They have three 10-win seasons in the five-year span. However, Harbaugh has yet to beat Ohio State and only won one bowl game his first season.
The success that has occurred under Harbaugh is always pushed to the background. The ultimate goals for Michigan are to beat Ohio State and win a Big Ten championship. Anything less than that, it is more of the same for Wolverine fans.
How much longer can the fans take not achieving those goals? In a weird year, Harbaugh will probably get another pass if he fails to achieve the top two goals. But beating Ohio State needs to happen soon or athletic director Warde Manuel will need to start asking serious questions about Harbaugh’s tenure.
The Wolverines have a lot of talent as Harbaugh has been recruiting well. They will be replacing several key players though. Let us take a look at the 2020 edition of Michigan.
