Boise State Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over Utah State
Boise State football opened its 2020 season with a blowout win over Utah State. What did we learn about the Broncos from this one?
After a long wait, Boise State finally got back to work on Saturday night, hosting Utah State in the 2020 season opener. The Broncos came out on top 42-13 in blowout fashion.
The Broncos led 28-0 at halftime and never looked back thanks to a strong performance from Hank Bachmeier at quarterback and George Holani at running back. Oh, and that defense wasn’t too shabby either.
Maybe, just maybe, the AP voters will give Boise State a look after this convincing win.
What’d we learn from Boise State’s big win?
3. Boise State’s defense is legit
Coming into the season later than most teams, there were plenty of question marks surrounding Boise State. The Broncos had a team that looked like it could contend in the Mountain West again and might even lead the New Year’s Six race for the Group of Five.
The Broncos are one of those teams that always seems to find a way to compete and they usually have elite offenses and they may have just that this year, but the defense stands out, too.
Utah State was excited about Jason Shelley at quarterback heading into this one but Boise State held him in check throughout, limiting him to 92 yards and an interception on 14-of-27 completions, averaging under four yards per attempt.
The run defense was solid, too, holding Utah State to 111 yards on 43 carries, good for just 2.6 per attempt.
This defense is legit, folks.
