Alabama Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over Tennessee
By Dante Pryor
1. Quick takeaways for Alabama
On the first play of the game, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle suffered a horrific ankle injury and will possibly miss the rest of the season.
Despite the loss of the All-American wide receiver, the passing game dominated. Waddle’s replacement, Slade Bolden had 94 yards receiving. Four receivers had six receptions or more for the Crimson Tide.
Defensively, the Tide were very “boa constrictor” like. Though there was the one turnover and zero sacks, the Volunteers had issues sustaining drives all game. The Volunteers had 12 possessions; only two of those possessions were 10 plays or more; six of those drives were five plays or fewer.
Quick takeaways for Tennessee
Jarrett Guarantano flashed on a couple of plays but was inconsistent once again. The senior quarterback completed barely over 50 percent of his throws. Though he threw two touchdowns and no interceptions, the Volunteers could not sustain drives. The Volunteers wanted to ground and pound to take pressure off of Guarantano, but the Volunteers were down 21-3 before they could blink.
It is difficult to run the football against a team that can score every time they get the ball. The Tennessee defense did not give their team an opportunity to stay in the game or get back in the game.
