BYU football hosted Texas State in Week 8 and the Cougars coasted to a 52-14 victory. What’d we learn from BYU’s sixth win of the year?

The Zach Wilson Show continued on Saturday evening as BYU hosted a struggling Texas State team and pulled away for a 52-14 victory to improve to 6-0.

The Cougars are one of the only remaining unbeaten teams in college football and they are on the verge of a top-10 ranking, especially after a whacky Week 8, highlighted by a Penn State upset loss at the hands of Indiana.

While BYU may still be on the outside of the top 10 looking in after this weekend, the Cougars look like true threats to finish the regular season undefeated. Is a College Football Playoff berth out of the question? Maybe since the Cougars aren’t in a conference and can’t win a league title, but who wouldn’t want to see Wilson and Co. in a final four situation against a team like Alabama?

3. Defense was solid, but could use more of a pass rush

BYU had a fine defensive performance against Texas State which was refreshing because the Cougars struggled at times against Houston and UTSA.

The Cougars allowed just 267 total yards and finished with five tackles for loss and a couple of interceptions, but the lack of a serious pass rush was concerning. BYU finished with zero sacks and had just five quarterback hurries on 31 drop-backs by Texas State. That’s not terrible, but it’s not going to cut it against some contenders down the stretch.

This team is trying to make a run at a New Year’s Six bowl and if they can’t generate a pass rush against 1-6 Texas State, what makes you think the Cougars will do so against some Power Five foes if they do make a major bowl game?
