College Football 2020: 5 Group of Five teams on upset alert in Week 9
4. UAB (vs. Louisiana Tech)
Before Bill Clark got to UAB, the Blazers had been to one bowl game in their history. When he got there, the Alabama Board of Trustees shut down the program to save money. It didn’t last long, and Clark stuck around to make UAB one of C-USA’s top programs. They won the C-USA championship in 2018 and the West division of C-USA in 2019.
As for Louisiana Tech, they’ve epitomized average so far in 2020. Their losses to BYU and Marshall were no surprise, along with a close loss to UTSA. They haven’t lost to anyone who they were expected to beat, but now they have a chance to get the rest of C-USA to stand on notice.
The Bulldogs have had almost no ground game to speak of through six games. Their leading rusher, Israel Tucker, only has 282 yards rushing on the season. If they can get more balance to their offense, Louisiana Tech is a strong enough team in the passing game to put a scare into UAB.
