College Football Rankings 2020: Projected AP Top 25 for Week 10
By Zach Bigalke
Upsets and near-upsets marked college football’s state of affairs on Halloween weekend. How will it impact the AP Top 25 when it comes out on Sunday?
Some teams suffered through tricks on Halloween, while others were rewarded with treats. Week 9 saw several AP Top 25 teams collapse in defeat, while others barely held on for victory to maintain position in the rankings. With few matchups between Top 25 teams on the docket this week, that meant upsets that will shake up the rankings from top to bottom.
It was also a week impacted by COVID-19. Once again games were delayed across the country, including several matchups of Top 25 teams. With the coronavirus impacting FIU, Marshall was forced to sit out this week. Conference USA will try to reschedule that game later this year.
Wisconsin won’t be as lucky given the lack of any buffer built into the Big Ten schedule. As the virus spread throughout the locker room and forced at least a dozen players — including wunderkind quarterback Graham Mertz — into isolation, the Badgers erred on the side of caution and refrained from traveling to Lincoln for a divisional showdown against Nebraska. That game will not be rescheduled.
Other teams played shorthanded, as stars like Trevor Lawrence contracted COVID-19 and could only watch as their teams struggled through Week 9 action.
In a season where everything has been off-kilter, and as the United States is seeing cases ramp up during the approach to wintertime, we are sure to see more players fall ill and more contests postponed or canceled.
