2. Mississippi State shut out by Alabama

Mississippi State was on top of the world a few weeks ago when it defeated the defending champion LSU Tigers. Since then, the Bulldogs are on a three-game losing streak in the process to develop a high-powered air raid offense. The Bulldogs had a huge game going into the weekend, traveling to Tuscaloosa to face No. 2 Alabama.

There were expectations of the Bulldogs offense despite the Tide being the heavy favorites. They were facing a defense that could be gashed — just ask Ole Miss. The Bulldogs were only able to account for 163 passing yards as they had two interceptions on 28-of-48 completions. They offense only accounted for 3.4 yards per attempt.

The Tide’s defense accounted for two sacks, six tackles for loss, nine pass breakups, and eight quarterback hurries. Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II returned an interception of 25-yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs had one of the highest-ranked secondaries in the SEC but they knew they would be in for a fight against the Tide’s elite passing game. Mac Jones had a big game as he threw for 291 yards, four touchdowns on 24-for-31 passing. DeVonta Smith had an even bigger game by catching 11 passes for 203 yards and four touchdowns.

Mississippi State (1-4) is in a more difficult position as star running back Kylin Hill has opted out of the 2020 season in preparation for the 2021 NFL Draft process. This Saturday, the Bulldogs will host Vanderbilt (0-4) in hopes to win their first game since Week 1 of SEC play.
