College Football New Year’s Six Watch, Week 10: A legit playoff argument?
By Dante Pryor
5. No. 16 Marshall Thundering Herd (5-0)
Doc Holiday and the Herd have quietly put together a fantastic season in Conference USA. Marshall is in the driver’s seat in C-USA with the inside track to win the East division with their 20-9 victory over Florida Atlantic. They also own a win over a ranked team, a 17-7 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
Marshall gets it done with defense and a methodical offense. The Thundering Herd are 15th in the country in points allowed giving up 9.4 points per game. Brenden Knox leads an offense that averages just under 200 yards per game. If Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina falter, the Herd could be looking at the NY6.
4. No. 9 BYU Cougars (7-0)
The Cougars were not happy when their schedule was ripped apart because of the pandemic. Head coach Kelani Sitake felt this team strongly could garner an at large bid with their pre-COVID-19 schedule. The Cougars did well enough to put a schedule together, and BYU will play a full 10-game schedule this season.
Unfortunately for the Cougars, none of the 10 teams on the schedule are from the Power Five. However, the Cougars have run roughshod over the teams on their schedule. BYU has an explosive offense led by quarterback Zach Wilson, one of the best in the country. The Cougars followed the offense with one of the best defensive units in college football as well.
The Cougars are making an argument, but their schedule might work against them.
