BYU Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over Boise State
BYU football continued to roll through the 2020 season with a dominant 51-17 road win over Boise State. What’d we learn from this one?
The first Week 10 matchup between two ranked teams took place on the blue turf of Albertsons Stadium. The BYU Cougars have been steamrolling through this wacky 2020 schedule and finally found themselves against a ranked opponent.
Boise State has won fairly easy themselves through their first two games. The Broncos have beaten their first two opponents by a combined score of 91-43. One of these teams had to give Friday night in Boise.
BYU got the party started early on just their second play from scrimmage. Tyler Allgeier broke off a monster 86-yard touchdown run to put BYU up 7-0 from the start. The Cougars never looked back as they locked in defensively, holding freshman quarterback Cade Fennegan to just 3.8 yards per completion in the first half.
Jack Sears was the Broncos starter tonight (replacing Hank Bachmeier who has not played in two weeks), but had to leave in the first quarter to what looked like a concussion.
This made Boise State have to go all the day down the depth chart to a third-stringer in Fennegan and eventually a fourth stringer in Andy Peters .
The Bronco offense was stale all night long, only putting up three points through the first three quarters. Getting to the third and fourth-string quarterbacks handicapped their down field playmaking significantly. Late in the game, Khalil Shakir was able to secure two 40-plus yard touchdown grabs, but this type of playmaking was missing for the majority of the contest.
BYU on the other hand, had a high powered offense led by their star quarterback Zach Wilson. He had yet another fantastic game, completing 77 percent of his passes with 359 passing yards and three total touchdowns. The Cougars put up 50 points for the third time this year and also tacked on 573 yards of total offense
BYU took care of business on Friday night and poured it on the Broncos. What did we learn?
