Iowa State Football: 3 takeaways from win over Baylor in Week 10
By Andrew Tineo
Iowa State football was hoping to make some noise against Baylor in Week 10 and the Cyclones pulled off the win over the Bears.
Over the last few seasons, these two teams have turned this game into a rivalry. Whether it was an all-out brawl in 2018 and a game winning kick in 2019 for Baylor, these two teams clearly do not like each other.
This season’s success for Iowa State has been the emergence of Breece Hall as a legit running back not only in the conference, but the country. On the first drive, it was Brock Purdy trying to use his arm to beat the Bears. It would end up in the hands of the Bears as Kalon Barnes would force an early turnover for Baylor.
Baylor would waste no time as a 62-yard pitch and catch to wide receiver Jared Atkinson. Charlie Brewer would finish the drive with a touchdown pass to RJ Sneed as the underdog Bears would strike first.
The Cyclones would go with a heavy dose of Hall as the Cyclones worked their way down the field. That’s until Purdy would throw an inaccurate pass, that would be deflected for another interception. Raleigh Texada would return it 57 yards, giving Baylor another chance to strike early.
The Bears would capitalize once again as freshman tight end Drake Dabney would catch his first career touchdown.

Charlie Brewer would make his first mistake with an interception along the sideline. Tayvonn Kyle would come with the interception and the Cyclones would be in good field position.
This time, Iowa State would take advantage of a turnover, as Hall would continue his dominant season. He scores from 12 yards out as Iowa State gets on the board.
The disaster of a half for Purdy continues as Purdy throws his third interception, this time to Jalen Pitre who would cross into the end zone to put the Bears up two scores once again.

Purdy would not be the only one with turnover issues. After a punt by Baylor, Iowa State ‘s Greg Eisworth II would muff the ensuing punt and be recovered by Baylor.
Baylor would end up with a field goal. After a great kick off return, Brock Purdy would toss his first touchdown of the half with a throw to elite tight end Charlie Kolar.
What would be a gut check for the Bears is when Terrel Bernard would go down with an injury, who is an All-Big 12 candidate. Hall would make them pay and all of a sudden, Iowa State has momentum and a tied ballgame.
The tide of the game would completely change, with Iowa State Cyclones would march down the field and Purdy would toss his second touchdown of the game. This time, he hits the other tight end, Chase Allen for the score.
The Cyclones would block a punt, creating some magic on special teams of their own. A six-yard touchdown pass to Hall puts the Cyclones in complete control of a game that looked.
Still fighting, on fourth down, Charlie Brewer would hit running back Trestan Ebner and he would run 58 yards for the score. Although, not out of it, Baylor would pull within seven.
After an Iowa State punt, the Bears would get a chance to storm down the field and tie the game. Brewer would drive the Bears down the field, only to be intercepted by captain Mike Rose.
With a crazy game, worth of six turnovers and constant momentum shifts, it would be Iowa State that would hang on for the win at home, 38-31.
Purdy would finish with 164 yards and three touchdowns, alongside three interceptions. For Brewer, he would collect 295 yards, three touchdowns, to his two interceptions.
