Arkansas Football: 3 takeaways from comeback win over Tennessee
3. The Razorbacks’ defense came through
The Razorbacks’ defense found itself with its back against the wall in the first half as it allowed 13 points. They did get better throughout the second quarter as they allowed only 57 total yards and allowed an average of 4.1 yards per play. This was a better comparison than their first-quarter performance where they allowed an average of five yards per play.
There were serious concerns for the Razorbacks offense, especially their line, as they allowed four sacks in the fourth quarter alone. The defense picked up the extra slack. While the Volunteers accounted for six first downs in the fourth as they were extending drives, they were not efficient on third downs as they were 1-for-5.
The last two drives for Tennessee ended in two interceptions from Harrison Bailey.
Arkansas allowed 292 total yards with 107 of them coming from the passing game. Outside linebacker Bumper Pool was highly efficient in defending the passing and running game of Tennessee as he accounted for 14 total tackles, six solo tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one quarterback hit. Strong safety Jalen Catalon accounted for 12 total tackles and one of the two interceptions against Tennessee along with defensive end Eric Gregory.
Senior defensive tackle and safety Joe Foucha each accounted for a sack against the Volunteers. The defense for the Razorbacks, led by defensive coordinator Barry Odom, is becoming one of the most efficient units in the SEC and they look to better throughout the season.
