Texas A&M Football: 3 takeaways from blowout win over South Carolina

Coming into this week’s slate of games, this particular matchup between the Aggies and South Carolina had upset alert written all over it. The Aggies had two very close calls against teams they were expected to beat. Texas A&M earlier on this season had trouble putting away a 0-4 Vanderbilt squad and two win Arkansas.
Both teams came in to today’s game with a must win attitude. The Aggies needed to win to keep any CFP hopes they have alive, and the Gamecocks needed to get back on track after a blowout loss at the hands of LSU last week.
The Aggies offense put the Gamecocks away early, heading into halftime with a three touchdown lead and all the momentum. South Carolina simply had no answer for Kellen Mond and running back Isaiah Spiller who ran for 131 yards. The Gamecocks were only able to manage a field goal with just six minutes left in the game.
Despite this game not being the most competitive, here are my three takeaways from this blowout.
3. Kellen Mond shut the critics up — for now
The biggest question coming into 2020 for the Aggies was whether starting quarterback Kellen Mond could put up consistent numbers. Ever since Jimbo Fisher took over the reins, Mond has been put under an even heavier spotlight after coming to campus with a considerable amount of hype.
Mond had no trouble breaking a part the Gamecocks defense throwing for four touchdowns and rushed for another putting South Carolina away by the end of the first half.
Mond already holds career Aggies marks for completions, passing yards and total offense with more on the way as his senior season continues.
The senior finished the game 16-of-26 for 224 yards. He has a big test on the road next week versus Tennessee in Knoxville.
