BYU Football: 3 hot takes from blowout win over Boise State
1. BYU has best shot of non-Power Five teams to make CFP
The College Football Playoff has been elusive for non-Power Five teams not named Notre Dame since its introduction. Notre Dame is the only team from outside of the Power Five to make the playoff and the Irish only did so because they play a rigorous schedule which catches the playoff committee’s eye.
For teams like BYU, which also happens to be an independent, it’s tougher to make the playoff because of that lack of quality wins. The Cougars did have a decent schedule set up this season before COVID-19 forced a restructure but they are making a serious case.
Right now, Cincinnati is the highest-ranked non-Power Five team in the country and many would argue that the Bearcats have the best shot to make the playoff, but BYU could still add a team to the schedule and the Cougars are playing like the best team outside that Power Five.
For that reason, I’m going to say if any team from outside of those five conference makes the playoff and breaks that non-Power Five mold, it’s going to be BYU.
