2. SMU at Tulsa

When Oklahoma State struggled to score on Tulsa it was seen as a referendum on the Cowboys. When Tulsa shutdown UCF in the second half to come from behind and upset the Knights, people took notice. What was Tulsa doing that so many, supposedly better teams could not?

They played defense in the year 2020. A novelty for sure, but led by Zaven Collins the Golden Hurricanes have proven to be one of the best defensive teams in the Group of Five. It’s exciting to see that lined up across from them is one of the best offenses in the Group of Five, the SMU Mustangs.

SMU, led by Shane Buechele at quarterback, will test the Tulsa defense. Having thrown for 2,581 yards, no other quarterback in college football has more yards than Buechele.

Of course, in a year where everyone has played a different amount of games it’s worth pointing out that UCF’s Dillon Gabriel leads the nation in passing yards per game. Buechele is seventh. Tulsa is the only team to keep Gabriel from throwing multiple touchdowns and only one of two teams to keep him under 400 yards. So, in the clash of styles against Buechele and SMU, Tulsa knows how to attack the Mustangs.

Oh, and the winner takes control of second place in the AAC, necessary for making the conference championship game.
