3. Coastal Carolina (vs. App State)

I was surprised to not see this game on Dan Morrison’s Group of Five upsets. I reached out and asked, and Dan had this to say:

"“Coastal and App State to me is a toss up game. No one expected Coastal to be good. They’ve been mediocre in the Sun Belt for a couple of seasons, but they found a quarterback and the defense improved and they took off. App State was expected to run away with the conference but they lost to Marshall (not Sun Belt, so they’re undefeated in the conference) and have been winning without blowing anyone out in the conference. Coastal is the ranked team but App State is the conference power who is unranked based on a loss to top 25 Marshall. I didn’t think it would be an upset either way. App State has more talent top to bottom.”"

Honestly I agree with everything Dan said. App State was looked on at the start of the season as a potential New Year’s Six buster and a loss that doesn’t look nearly as questionable now as it did has knocked them out of position.

Even with all of that said, Coastal Carolina is ranked No. 15 in the country and a 5.5-point favorite in the game.

If Appalachian State wins, this shouldn’t be looked at as an upset. The Mountaineers are loaded everywhere and on the biggest stage they have left, they’ll remind the nation why they’re the premier team in the Sun Belt.
