Now that Urban Meyer is out of the running to be the head coach of Texas football, here are the best remaining candidates outside of Tom Herman.

We know one thing about the Texas football head coaching search — Urban Meyer won’t fill it. After that, things are still wide open including the possibility that Tom Herman is fired or kept.

According to the American-Statesman, Texas officials learned that Meyer wouldn’t be taking the job. However, that doesn’t mean that Herman’s job is safe. Here’s a quote from the article:

"“No decision has been made about whether to move on from UT’s current coach Tom Herman, the source said. Texas officials are still “sorting through” their options.”"

Obviously, if you can get Urban Meyer as your head coach, that’s a home run and there’s few coaches who could survive. Yet, it’s still unclear for what that means going forward for Herman, who led Texas to an impressive win at Kansas State last Saturday.

In nearly four full seasons though, Texas football has a record of 31-18. The Longhorns have finished in the top 25 just twice in his tenure and one of those rankings was 25th. He’s also put together just one 10-win season, although there have been zero losing campaigns.

In his defense, there was the trip to the Big 12 championship game two years ago, the Sugar Bowl victory and a win over Oklahoma. That’s a sign of progress but also, Sam Ehlinger has been Herman’s quarterback the last four years and he has little to show for it.

So if Texas football does move on, who would be the top candidates? Here are three that seem like a really good fit.
