LSU football acted before the NCAA, self-imposing a bowl ban for the 2020 season and no one should be all that impressed with the move.

From heroes to zeroes, LSU has gone from the top of the sport to the bottom amid an investigation into wrongdoings within the program. That has led the athletic department to self-imposing some penalties to attempt to avoid further punishment from the NCAA.

According to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, LSU self-imposed a one-year bowl ban along with sanctions pertaining to scholarships and recruiting visits.

The Tigers acted proactively, hoping that the NCAA wouldn’t hit the program with even harsher penalties regarding boosters paying the father of a football player and Odell Beckham Jr. handing out cash to players following the national title game last year.

But we all know this probably isn’t the extent of it. The problems within the program don’t stop with one player getting paid. It’s rarely ever that easy and LSU took an easy way out.

Sitting at 3-5 this season, LSU wasn’t going bowling this season anyways, so a one-year self-imposed ban isn’t going to earn any applause from the college football world and the NCAA shouldn’t look at the move and think, “Yeah, that should do it.”

Nope, this should be more severe.

I get it, this stuff likely happens at every major program, but the problem here is that LSU got caught and instead of doing something that causes everyone to go “wow, they are serious about doing the right thing”, the Tigers instead decided to ban themselves from the postseason in a year that they wouldn’t have made it anyways.

How honorable of you, LSU.
