3. Nevada (vs. San Jose State)

What’s it going to take for San Jose State to get some respect?

The Spartans are a perfect 5-0 on the season. They’ve gotten some votes for the AP Poll, but overall people are still not paying enough attention to this team.

The Spartans have been successful for two reasons this year: quarterback Nick Starkel and the defense. Both of those entities will give Nevada fits on Friday night.

Starkel has been excellent this season, especially with limiting turnovers. That’ll be key to beating the Wolfpack. San Jose State cannot afford to give Nevada a short field because Nevada will take advantage if the opportunity arises. They’ll also need to run better than last year: the Spartans rushed for just 15 yards in last season’s close loss.

On defense, San Jose State’s great run defense that allows just 125 yards per game will be going up against a Nevada rush offense averaging just 107. Needless to say, that means the Nevada passing attack is what’s going to have to beat the Spartans. The pass heavy Nevada team averages 334 yards per game through the air. San Jose State must hold the Wolfpack under 250 yards. It’ll be a tall task, but it’s doable.

If San Jose State wins this, they’ll finally get Boise State. But in this game, it’ll be for the Mountain West championship.
