San Jose State locked down its place in the Mountain West championship game with a Friday-night takedown of Nevada. Playing in Las Vegas due to COVID-19 lockdowns in California, the Spartans were down 20-7 at halftime but scored 23 unanswered points after the intermission to pull away for the 30-20 win. Now up to 6-0 in the standings, San Jose State will slot in as one of the last teams in the College Football Playoff Top 25.

Nick Starkel went off for 306 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20-of-30 passing. Tyler Nevens exploded for 184 yards and a touchdown on just a dozen carries. While San Jose State’s defense gave up nearly 400 yards and 24 first downs to the Wolf Pack, they also generated a pair of critical second-half turnovers that prevented Nevada from regaining momentum in the contest.

With the win, the Spartans ensured that they will take on Boise State in the MWC title game on December 19. While a 7-0 San Jose State team would still have a hard time surpassing other Group of Five champions in the race for a New Year’s Six bid, they remain the best hope for the Mountain West to get back to a major bowl game this season.
