College Football 2020: 5 things we learn from Week 15 action
By Michael Tate
Week 15 of the college football season provided a lot of twists and turns. What did we learn from the latest slate of games?
The final regular season week of the 2020 season will be remembered simply as “the shoe” for Gator fans. Florida’s surprising 37-34 loss to LSU on Saturday ended any shot the Gators may have had to sneak their way into the College Football Playoff.
While that may have been the biggest headline of the week in terms of national importance, there were other exciting games with big storylines coming out of Saturday.
We saw two North Carolina running backs do what no other duo has done in college football history. Then, there was the Coastal Carolina fighting off a scare from Troy. Also, the Heisman conversation should look a lot different after Saturday’s slate of games.
Here are the five things we learned on Saturday.
5. DeVonta Smith should be a Heisman front-runner
We learned on Saturday that DeVonta Smith should be the leading vote-getter for the Heisman Trophy this season. He finished Saturday’s game against Arkansas with six catches for 133 yards and a touchdown but it was Smith’s dazzling 84-yard punt return that stole the show for the Crimson Tide.
Before his punt return, the Alabama offense only scored three points on their first two possessions. After his return, the Tide would go on to score touchdowns on their next six drives. That punt return not only showed Smith’s versatility as a playmaker, but it also exemplified his ability to ignite the Alabama offense.
Whenever Smith touches the ball, he can take it to the house. His performance on Saturday coupled with him leading the Power Five in receiving yards and touchdowns should make him the favorite to win the Heisman.
This opinion of course, was helped by the fact that Florida blew an opportunity to play in the College Football Playoff.
