Nebraska Football: 3 takeaways from Huskers win over Rutgers
What to do about QB?
Martinez put up some really good numbers when it was all said and done, but he also fumbled the ball twice in the first quarter and tossed two interceptions.
Thankfully, the defense was able to limit Rutgers to just 250 yards and a pair of field goals early so things didn’t get out of hand, but against top-notch teams, that start would have sunk Nebraska.
So is Martinez the guy to lead this program next season and going forward? With the new eligibility rules, he could have two more seasons with the Huskers.
Without the turnovers, Martinez was exceptional. He threw a 38-yard touchdown to Wan’Dale Robinson, who has turned into a star for the Huskers and also had 255 yards in the air.
Martinez has the ability to run and he’s been much more accurate throwing the ball since his return to the starting lineup but the turnovers have been constant and they have to stop.
Four-star Logan Smothers is waiting in the wings and McKenzie Milton is out there in the transfer portal, so it will be interesting to see how Frost handles the quarterback position heading into his fourth-year as head coach, which will be a huge year for his turnaround efforts.
