Alabama Football: With Camar Wheaton, 2021 class could be best ever
The rich got even richer Wednesday night as Alabama football landed the commitment of five-star running back Camar Wheaton.
It shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone, but Alabama football added yet another five-star talent Wednesday night thanks to the commitment of running back Camar Wheaton.
Obviously, the Tide already had the top-ranked recruiting class in 2021 prior to Wheaton’s decision which came down Wednesday.
Oklahoma was thought to be the favorite at one time but the Crimson Tide were able to land him in the end, which now has Alabama football within striking distance of Florida for 247sports’ top recruiting class of all time back in 2010.
That Gators team racked up 324.62 points according to 247 and with the addition of Wheaton, a five-star running back ranked 24th overall in 2021, the Tide are moving in and now have 323.08.
Wheaton is Alabama football’s seventh five-star recruit in the 2021 class and what makes it even better for the Tide is that they didn’t have a running back committed yet in the class and now, they have they have the second-ranked back in the class.
Wheaton averaged 7.6 yards per attempt in high school in Garland, Texas and scored 48 rushing touchdowns as he nearly racked up 4,000 yards.
The loss is a huge blow to the Sooners, who also missed out on Donovan Edwards, a top-5 running back in 2021 that ended up going to Michigan.
Alabama was also in the mix for Edwards, but wasn’t able to get him out of the state of Michigan, which left Wheaton as the top running back target for both programs.
While Ohio State football has gotten a ton of publicity this cycle and there was some thought that the Buckeyes could take the top spot from Alabama, that seems unlikely now.
J.T. Tuimoloau is expected to choose the Buckeyes as of right now, but Alabama football is still in the mix for a number of high-ranked four-star prospects which would still give them a shot at passing the Gators 2021 haul.
Regardless of whether that happens, there’s no doubt that the best program in America, just got better and it’s just another reminder of the gap that exists between the haves and the have-nots.
And since Alabama is expected to lose its top two rushers, who are both seniors, the addition of Wheaton comes as a perfect time as he can enter the fray next season to the Tide’s next starter.
