Cure Bowl 2020: 3 takeaways from Liberty’s wild win over Coastal Carolina
2. Coastal Carolina never gave up
After a stagnant first quarter, the Chanticleers fought tooth and nail to finish off their perfect season. They outscored Liberty by a score of 34-20 in regulation after being down 14-0. It unfortunately was not enough to close out the perfect season, but they gave us yet another fantastic finish.
Grayson McCall put out an outstanding effort in his first year as a starter and tonight was no different as he put up 414 total yards, four touchdowns and led the charge on Coastal’s insane comeback. He made the clutch throws and was causing major headaches with his role in Coastal’s option offense.
Jaivon Heiligh also stepped up to be the most reliable receiver on the field in Orlando. He finished with 178 yards on 13 receptions. He set a Cure Bowl record for both receptions and catches, while also tying the record for most receptions by a Sun Belt player in a bowl game.
Coastal’s defense did not have answers for Malik Willis’ running ability, but they were able to counter him by forcing four turnovers. Also have to credit this defense for making an incredible play to get that ball out in a spot where Liberty was seconds from victory.
They gave it everything they had, but in the end were not able to finish off a perfect season. Players, staff and fans of this team will always remember this team as it seemed like every week they had a frantic finish. In a wild, chaotic season, the Chanticleers made the best of what they were given.
