Texas A&M football had a year to remember in 2020. From a big win over Florida to an Orange Bowl berth over UNC, let’s look at the season in review.

To look at the season in review, we have to go all the way back to Week 1 to the matchup with Vanderbilt — a defensive showdown in which the offense struggled to get much of anything going. The Aggies won by five, 17-12, but at that point morale for the fan base was at a low and things weren’t looking great for them.

They then went to Alabama and things went from bad to worse, losing by 28 on the road to one of the top teams in the nation. Things were looking up at the start of the game, but it quickly got out of hand and the Aggies fell 52-24.

However, things started really looking up in Week 3 with a season and maybe even program defining win over Florida. Kellen Mond met Kyle Trask shot for shot and thanks to a late turnover, the Aggies were able to put up a game-winning field goal and win 41-38 at Kyle Field.

Next, the Aggies headed to Mississippi State in a game that had many worried as it had been a while since they won in Starkville. Thanks to a strong showing from the running game with Spiller finishing with 114 yards and two touchdowns, the Aggies won 28-14.

On Halloween, the Aggies took on Feliepe Franks and the Arkansas Razorbacks. They continued their winning streak against the Razorbacks with a 42-31 win that was much more dominating than the final score gives credit for.  Speaking of dominating, the Aggies followed up the win over the Razorbacks with an absolute smackdown of the Gamecocks of South Carolina, 48-3.

After having two games postponed thanks to contact tracing, the Aggies welcomed LSU to Kyle Field and won in a near shut out, 21-7. Texas A&M surely welcomed a win over LSU, a team that they struggled with historically and really felt as if they had turned a corner here.

A fourth-quarter comeback on the road against Auburn, 31-20, and a win over Tennessee, 34-13,  gave the Aggies two final wins despite Senior Night being lost due to the game with Ole Miss being canceled thanks to COVID-19.

On top of all that, the Aggies- who felt shafted when the Playoff rankings came out- found a way to put up 24 points in the fourth quarter of the Orange Bowl to move past UNC, 41-27, and finish 9-1 in a turbulent and unforgiving 2020 season in which quarterback Kellen Mond broke record after record.

The senior class, which I highlighted here, showed that they were ready to fight from start to finish and were able to prove that the group that came from a UCLA fall-apart to start their careers were ready to go and able to help their team finish in the top five.

It is really the young guns though that has this program looking toward the future and sighing in contentment. This team has a lot to look forward to and to hope to build upon from 2020. As Jimbo Fisher said after an Orange Bowl win, these Aggies aren’t done yet.

Get excited for what the future holds for the Maroon and White.
