The other candidates are underwhelming

With Moore out of the mix, Andy Avalos is the No. 1 candidate at this point according to the Idaho Press and like Moore, he has the benefit of being a former Bronco.

Avalos is currently the defensive coordinator for Oregon and has been in that position for the past two years. Before that, he was the DC for Boise State football and did a great job. His defenses were known for forcing turnovers and he would make a big impact on that side of the ball.

He also has deep ties to Boise State and would make a ton of sense. The other candidates is Jeff Choate of Montana State.

He’s not as well-known but he’s built a really good program at the FCS level and worked for Petersen at Washington and also coached as Boise State, in addition to being from Idaho.

Choate has the head-coaching experience Avalos doesn’t have but the Broncos don’t need to be rebuilt. They need to regain their perch as the elite program in the Mountain West and really in all of the group of five.

With the right hire, that’s definitely possible and if Herman is interested in the job, Boise State should do everything it can to bring him on board because he could be that guy.
