Looking back at 2020, it was the best season in the history of Iowa State football and here’s three things we learned about the Cyclones.

When you look at what the 2020 Iowa State football team accomplished, there is no doubt that it’s the best team the Cyclones have ever had.

Iowa State football won a major bowl game for the first time thanks to its convincing win over Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. It nearly won its first conference championship in a century and likely for the first time in program history, the Cyclones will finish in the AP top 10.

In the 123-year history of Iowa State football, the Cyclones have finished in the final AP top 25 just twice — ending up 19th in 1976 and 25th in 2000. It’s been that long.

The nine wins racked up by Iowa State football this season tied the program record set by that 2000 team. Had things gone differently in that Big 12 championship game against Oklahoma, it would have been the first 10-win season ever.

But with head coach Matt Campbell not going anywhere, at least not right now and a number of others such as quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Breece Hall and linebacker Mike Rose all expected back, this team certainly has a chance to be in the mix again.

It’s an exciting time to be an Iowa State football fan but before looking ahead to the future and what could be, here’s a look at what we learned about the Cyclones in 2020.
