An elite defensive mind and a winner

Two other things you have to really like about Avalos is that he’s won a bunch of championships, both as a player and a coach and he’s an elite defensive mind.

Obviously, his defensive coaching skills certainly played a part in Boise State football winning three Mountain West conference championships during his time there, as well as Oregon winning back-to-back Pac-12 titles in his two seasons with the Ducks.

Last year, Oregon boasted a top-10 scoring defense and was 22nd overall in 2019. The Ducks also led the Pac-12 in sacks, tackles for loss and interceptions, which isn’t a surprise because Avalos has always had defenses known for forcing takeaways.

From 2016-18, Avalos’ defense ranked sixth in the nation in most defensive touchdowns and each year he produced a top four unit. So immediately, he can help a defense that ranked outside the top-50 in scoring defense.

Hiring the right offensive coordinator will be another key for Avalos but as long as he makes the right choice there, Boise State will be happy with Avalos, who will be a successful head coach.
