2. Mac Jones outplayed Justin Fields

After Justin Fields’ Superman-like effort against Clemson throwing six touchdown passes and only six incomplete passes, Fields looked very much like Clark Kent against Alabama. Fields were under pressure most of the game against the Crimson Tide renewed pass rush and had one of the worst games of his Ohio State career.

Fields completed barely 50 percent of his passes for 194 yards and a touchdown. Fields looked out of sync with his receivers most of the game and were bothered by the injury sustained against Clemson as well. It did not help that Trey Sermon broke his collar bone early and took away the balance the Buckeyes needed to keep pace with Alabama.

Mac Jones, on the other hand, had the greatest national title performance ever. Jones had more completions (36) and yards (464) than Joe Burrow last season and just as many touchdowns (5). Jones proved tonight he savvy moving in the pocket when faced with pressure. Jones was surgical in his accuracy and precision.

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian did a masterful job of scheming receivers open, and Jones did a masterful job of getting them the ball on time to run after the catch. Though Fields might be the second pick in the draft, Jones played more like the second pick.
