Coan has the tools and is the best fit

Buchner might be the future for Notre Dame but it takes time to learn to be a starter and Coan can help give him that. Before his injury, he was the starter for Wisconsin over the highly-touted Graham Mertz, so he knows a thing or two about playing with highly-ranked signal callers.

Coan will be in the program for just one year, so he’s not a threat long term and he will be vital in helping Buchner learn the game at the college level. His presence will also allow the Irish to develop Buchner at the right pace and avoid playing him before he’s ready.

It’s certainly possible the freshman beats out Coan, but remember, Jack is a veteran and he is a 68-percent passer in his career with 23 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.

There are down sides, such as the fact that he threw for over 200 yards in just six of his 14 starts in 2019 for Wisconsin, but that team also had Jonathan Taylor so throwing wasn’t always needed.

That could be the case this year for Notre Dame. The Irish have great backs and the offensive line should be good enough for the ground game to be the focal point. And Coan only has one game in his career with multiple interceptions and had nine without a turnover in 2019.
