By Dante Pryor
The Clemson football team made the National Semifinal again, falling short of the title game. Here is a report card of the Tigers season.
Depending on which person you ask, this season was either a success or a failure for the Clemson football team. To some, a sixth consecutive trip to the College Football Playoff, which has caused a significant uptick in recruiting, makes this a successful season despite falling short in the National Semifinal against Ohio State. Falling short against Ohio State and in the playoff for a second consecutive season makes this season a failure for some.
Perhaps Clemson football is at a point in their program where Championship or bust is now the standard. Even if this is true, that should not belittle Clemson’s season despite some of the pitfalls the Tigers endured.
Before the season started, Clemson learned wide receiver Justyn Ross had a career-threatening injury. Clemson lost Tee Higgins to the NFL draft and dealt with injuries. Two receivers expected to step up, Frank Ladson and Joseph Ngata, were hampered by injuries most season.
Offensive coordinator Jeff Scott became the first coordinator since Chad Morris to leave Clemson to take a head coaching job.
The defense suffered heavy attrition because of the NFL draft. Despite the adversity, Clemson had its share of accolades. Trevor Lawrence solidified himself as the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck.
Running back Travis Etienne became the ACC’s all-time leading rusher. No matter how you spin the season’s outcome, ten consecutive seasons with at least ten wins and six trips to the College Football Playoff are impressive. Here is the report card for the Tigers 2020-2021 season.
