Virginia Tech football dealt with COVID-19 all season. Despite the COVID-19 issues, the Hokies still played hard and played well at times.

The Virginia Tech Hokies had COVID-19 issues most of the season. Virginia Tech had players and coaches out due to coronavirus in nearly every game this season. Despite their struggles with viral outbreaks this season, the Hokies found their identity offensively and played courageous football all season.

Here are some of the staggering numbers the Hokies had dealing with the virus:

  • Sept. 26, versus North Carolina State: 23 players out
  • Oct. 3, versus Duke: Nearly every first and second-team player in the secondary were out
  • Oct. 10, at North Carolina: 15 players and coaches were ruled out because of COVID-19
  • Dec. 15, versus Virginia: 16 players out due to quarantine and isolation

Despite these numbers, the Hokies won five games, but Virginia Tech also played 11 this season. Tech’s issues with COVID-19 caused a revolving door at quarterback. Hendon Hooker, Braxton Burmeister and Quincy Patterson all saw significant playing time. Hooker led the Hokies in passing and was second on the team in rushing yards.

The defense did not exactly evoke memories of Bud Foster’s lunch pail units. However, the Hokies had their secondary out with novel coronavirus issues most of the season. There were at least two games the Hokies played with third-string defensive backs. Of all the defenses in the college football, Tech’s might be the most difficult to evaluate because of COVID-19.

Here is the Hokies’ end of the year report card.
