6. Desmond Howard, Michigan (1991)

Michigan’s Desmond Howard produced one of the most exciting and electrifying seasons in college football history in 1991. Howard became just the third wide receiver to ever win the Heisman Trophy after a season filled with big play after big play. Additionally, he was just the second player ever from the storied Michigan program to win the Heisman Trophy.

On the way to set multiple records during the season, he became the first wide receiver to ever lead the Big Ten in scoring with a mind-boggling 138 points. Howard secured 62 receptions for 985 yards, turning 19 of those catches into touchdowns. Also, he rushed 13 times for 180 yards along with two more scores.

Then, he returned 15 kicks for an amazing 412 yards and a touchdown. That is not all as he also had 20 punt returns for another 282 yards as well as a score.

Clearly, the honors poured in as a result of Howard’s incredible season. Besides winning the Heisman, he also won the Maxwell Award as well as the Walter Camp Award. Additionally, he was named a consensus All-American and, unsurprisingly, was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

Quite a season that deserves to be named one of the best wide receiver seasons in college football history.
