Tennessee Football: Can Josh Heupel turn around the Volunteers?
By Dante Pryor
Josh Heupel has been hired as the new head coach of Tennessee football. Can Heupel and AD Danny White turn the football program around?
Events unfolded quickly around the Tennessee football program in the last couple of weeks. Last Thursday, the Volunteers hired Danny White as their new Athletic Director from UCF. Less than a week later, White hired Josh Heupel as head coach.
White hired Heupel while AD at UCF as well. According to White, the University conducted a national search for a new head coach. “We ran an exhaustive nationwide search,” White said. “I know that sounds crazy because I’m hiring the guy I’ve worked with the last three years. If anything, I was trying not to hire the coach from UCF.”
Heupel has quite the mountain to climb in Knoxville. The Volunteers have been ranked outside the top 25 four consecutive seasons and haven’t finished in the top ten since 2001. The Volunteers have had one winning season in the last four.
Possible NCAA sanctions are looming over the football program. Not only is this a complete rebuild, but White and Heupel are also asking Tennessee fans to be patient yet again. Can Heupel turn Tennessee into a winner?
