Texas Tech football doesn’t have a clear starter at quarterback heading into 2021 but that could change with the transfer of Tyler Shough from Oregon.

The transfer portal has created a world of musical chairs when it comes to college football quarterbacks and Texas Tech football fans have gotten the full experience this offseason.

Last season’s starter for the Red Raiders, Alan Bowman, announced that he was entering the portal to finish his career elsewhere.

Bowman shared the job with Henry Colombi and neither quarterback was particularly effective as the Red Raiders were 4-6 and threw 11 interceptions compared to 18 touchdowns between the two of them.

Heading into this season under head coach Matt Wells, there appeared to be a quarterback competition on the horizon as Behren Morton, a highly-touted four-star quarterback signed with Texas Tech football in the 2021 recruiting class, was expected to compete with Colombi and others such as Bowman had he stayed.

Now, that competition is going to include Tyler Shough, who is transferring to the Red Raiders from Oregon after leading the Ducks to a Pac-12 championship in 2020.

Shough is leaving Oregon as a graduate transfer and will come to Texas Tech football with three years of eligibility and a chance to compete right away for the starting job.

Originally a four-star recruit in the class of 2018 out of Chandler, Arizona, he had offers from Michigan, Alabama, Florida and Georgia before eventually committing to the Ducks.

He didn’t see much playing time during the 2019 season with Justin Herbert leading the Ducks to a Pac-12 title and Rose Bowl win in 2019, but in 2020, Shough completed 63.9 percent of his passes while throwing 13 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

Shough, who is a 6-foot-5, also ran for 271 yards and two touchdowns for the Ducks last season, proving that he’s more than just a statue in the pocket.

For Texas Tech football, his addition is an important one. While Morton is obviously the future for the Red Raiders, they don’t want to play him before he’s ready and after not having a winning season since 2015, it would be nice to have an experienced QB who is a proven winner.

The goal for Matt Wells and company is getting back to a bowl game and if Shough is able to familiarize himself with the system and earn the starting job next fall, that could really help.
