Nebraska Football: 3 Huskers who need to breakout in 2021
Nebraska football faces an important season in 2021 for head coach Scott Frost and here are three Huskers who need to breakout.
Outside of a really difficult schedule, there are plenty of reasons to feel optimistic about Nebraska football heading into the 2021 season.
The Huskers did lose a number of players in the transfer portal including maybe their best offensive weapon Wan’Dale Robinson, but the cupboard isn’t bare.
Robinson’s absence will be felt, but, there’s a good chance that four-star tight end Thomas Fidone, a 6-foot-5 pass-catcher, will take over that role in the slot. Yes, he’s a tight end but he’s an elite receiver and is more of a move tight end.
There is no other clear option in the slot so Fidone will make a ton of sense there. The defense returns a bunch of veterans and maybe most importantly, quarterback Adrian Martinez is expected to be the starting quarterback once again.
Will Martinez finally deliver on his vast potential? He’s our first candidate among Nebraska football players who need to have a breakout campaign in 2021.
QB Adrian Martinez
Martinez has shown flashes of greatness during his time with Nebraska football but injuries and inconsistency have plagued him. Last season, he even lost the job for a while to Dylan McCaffrey, but when he earned it back, he seemed like a different player.
Nebraska has some talented quarterbacks behind Martinez, but he needs to be the guy and put this team on his back next season. Oftentimes, he will play well and not deliver at the end, like against Iowa. It’s time to deliver when it matters most.
With Fidone, transfers such as Samori Toure and running back Markese Stepp joining the fold, as well as holdovers from last season, Martinez should have all the pieces around him to be successful and if Nebraska is going to be back to a bowl game, he needs a solid 12-game season.
