Can Iowa State football win the Big 12 Championship this season?

The Iowa State football program had several firsts last season. The Cyclones’ 34-17 victory against the Oregon Ducks marked their first New Year’s Day bowl victory in their first New Year’s Day game.

Matt Campbell’s tenure as head coach at Iowa State is the best era of Iowa state football in program history. After a 3-9 first season, the Cyclones have had four consecutive winning seasons, including a program-best nine wins, their second in school history (the Cyclones won nine games in 2000).

Last season’s run to the Big 12 championship and Fiesta Bowl was largely due to the emergence of junior running back Breece Hall. Hall led the nation in rushing yards as the catalyst of the offense and was second in rushing touchdowns.

Hall has to duplicate the season he had for the Cyclones to have a chance to win the Big 12 and compete for the College Football Playoff. It will not be easy to beat Oklahoma (likely twice) in a conference title game scenario.

There are some key questions the Cyclones have to address if they are to win a Big 12 Championship for the first time in school history.
