Oklahoma Football: 3 offseason 2021 questions for the Sooners
By Dante Pryor
Oklahoma football won another conference title this season. Can the Sooners win the Big 12 again and compete for the playoff in 2021?
After a 1-2 start to their 2020 season, which included losses to Kansas State (for the second year in a row) and Iowa State, the Oklahoma Sooners won their final nine games, including a 55-20 route of a depleted Florida Gators team in the Cotton Bowl.
The reason for the turnaround is simple: everyone improved. First-year starting quarterback Spencer Rattler threw five interceptions the first four games of the season; he would throw just two the rest of the year.
The Sooners’ defense allowed 40 points in their first three games. Oklahoma gave up just over 13 points per game in their last nine, allowing over 25 only once. The defense generated multiple turnovers in four of their previous five games as well.
Rhamondre Stevenson returning from serving a suspension aided the running game and the pass rush aided by Ronnie Perkins’ return.
This season, the Sooners have the opportunity to have a full offseason with Rattler, knowing that he is the starting quarterback. That gives the five-star from Arizona plenty of opportunity to gel with one of the most talented receiver rooms in the country.
The question for the six-time Big 12 champions is can they return to the College Football Playoff and win a game? In order to do that, these are three offseason questions the Sooners have to address.
