Big 12 Football best players of all-time: 21. Teddy Lehman, LB, Oklahoma football
Teddy Lehman spent his freshman season as a rotational defender for Oklahoma and that wound up being a great season for him to be introduced to the NCAA. Lehman was part of the Sooners National Championship run that season and was able to learn from some talented defenders, which helped him as he grew into one of the best linebackers the university has ever had.
Lehman had 83 tackles with 10 going for a loss as a sophomore. He also had three sacks and caught an interception on one of the more famous plays in school history. When safety Roy Williams lit up Chris Simms from Texas, Lehman was the player who caught the ball to seal the win.
After that season, Lehman moved to the weak side, where he took over for Rocky Calmus. He got even better in that role recording 112 tackles, 17 for a loss, with two sacks, and two picks. His senior year was his best, however, with Lehman registering 117 tackles, 19 for a loss, and winning the Chuck Bednarik Award, Dick Butkus Award, and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors while also being named an All-American for the second year in a row.
Entering the 2004 NFL Draft, Lehman was considered by many draft experts to be the top prospect at outside linebacker in the class. He ended up being a high second-round pick, landing with the Detroit Lions at No. 37 overall.
